It is no secret that Guatemalan soccer has performed dismally on the international stage, even though its federation is one of the most heavily funded. In late 2015, a corruption scandal within Fedefut came to light, and then in 2018, FIFA suspended Guatemala from participating in all of its sanctioned competitions.
Guatemala has a Ministry of Culture and Sports, with the sports sector receiving the most support, even though the cultural sector is the one that stands out internationally.
This sculpture is an imagined portrayal of Guatemalan soccer’s poor performance, presented as a parody.
Maybe one day we’ll participate in a World Cup.
